Town index

  • Places: U.S. Census Bureau, 2025 Gazetteer files (place file). The 50 states and DC have 32,058 places in our index (Census incorporated places and census-designated places): 19,518 incorporated places and 12,540 census-designated places. Puerto Rico is not included yet.
  • New England towns: in the six New England states many towns are county subdivisions rather than Census places, so the state search for those states also includes 1,390 towns and plantations from the 2025 Gazetteer county subdivision file. They are not counted in the 32,058 figure.
  • Population: U.S. Census Bureau, Vintage 2025 city and town population estimates. These cover incorporated places plus one census-designated place, Urban Honolulu (shown on this site as Honolulu). State pages use them only to choose and order the first two lists: each state's 3 largest places, largest first, then every other place of 100,000 or more, A to Z. The lists show place names only.
  • Places that share a name: when two places in the same state have the same name, the list adds a short label to tell them apart, such as “(CDP)” for a census-designated place, “(village)”, or the county name. County names come from the U.S. Census Bureau TIGERweb county boundaries and the 2025 Gazetteer county file.
  • Census data is public domain. The Census Bureau does not endorse this site (Census terms of service).

Farms and markets

  • Vendor submissions through our listing form are the main source. Each listing records its source and the date it was checked.
  • USDA Local Food Directories (usdalocalfoodportal.com) list farmers markets, CSAs, on-farm markets and food hubs. Status: planned as a source of leads; we have not imported any USDA directory data yet.
  • USDA Organic Integrity Database (organic.ams.usda.gov/integrity). Status: we will use it to confirm any “certified organic” claim before showing it.
  • State agriculture departments and market associations are linked on each state page. We link only to pages that loaded correctly when we checked them on October 25, 2026. We have not copied any of their listings.
